In a major scam on Thursday [July 16], hackers targeted the Twitter accounts of prominent US figures, including former US President Barack Obama, and billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Bill Gates.

As the BBC reports, the takeover was part of an apparent Bitcoin scam encouraging people around the world to donate cryptocurrency to an unknown source.

“Everyone is asking me to give back,” a Tweet from Bill Gates’ account said. “You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.”

As per the BBC, Twitter said it was a “coordinated attack targeting its employees with access to internal systems and tools,” — adding that the hackers used this access to “take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf.”

“We also limited functionality for a much larger group of accounts, like all verified accounts (even those with no evidence of being compromised), while we continue to fully investigate this,” the company Tweeted.

It said that it has taken “significant steps” to limit access to internal systems and tools while the investigation is ongoing.
