The Central Market for Vegetables and Fruits in Al Mawaleh will resume operations effective today [Monday, June 8] for wholesale trade only between the hours of 10:00 p.m. till 6:00 a.m., Muscat Municipality has announced.
In a statement issued online, the Municipality has said that the decision falls in line with health and safety regulations put forth by Oman’s Supreme Committee to stem the spread of COVID-19.
Refrigerated vehicles will have their customs clearances and inspections carried out at border outlets or at the logistics centre by customs and agricultural quarantine staff.
Those vehicles that pass inspection procedures will be permitted to enter the market with proof of customs clearance and must unload their stock within 24 hours.
As per the Municipality, local suppliers will have to register their information online with the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries one day in advance of entering the market, so long as their goods are stored in a refrigerated truck with a capacity of three tonnes or more.
Local suppliers may enter the market at the same period (10:00 p.m. till 6:00 a.m.) and only two occupants will be allowed in the truck.
Wholesale buyers arriving at the market from different Wilayats will be allowed to enter to purchase vegetables and fruit in a refrigerated truck capable of carrying three tonnes or more, and no more than two people in the truck.
The Municipality has stated that the Central Market for Vegetables and Fruits will remain closed to private retailers, vehicles, and any unauthorized personnel.
