As Dhofar Governorate bears the brunt of a tropical low-pressure system lashing Oman’s southern coast, rescue operations continue to be carried out by Public Authority for Civil Defense and Ambulance (PACDA) teams to assist citizens and residents trapped in flooded areas.
In statements issued online, PACDA has confirmed the death of two people out of a group of seven after they were carried away in flood waters near Dhofar’s Ain Arzat area.
PACDA confirmed that five members of the group were rescued by emergency response teams and taken to safety, while the bodies of two others were located in the Ain Arzat valley.
PACDA authorities have also carried out a number of rescue operations among people who have became trapped in their vehicles on heavily-flooded roads and wadis.
As per PACDA, one citizen was reported drifting in his vehicle today [Saturday, May 30] in Wadi Dahboun in the Wilayat of Thumrait, and search efforts to locate the individual are ongoing in conjunction with the Royal Oman Air Force.
PACDA teams have also assisted in efforts to rescue a family who became trapped in their vehicle in a wadi in the Salhnot area of Salalah, while crews also responded to help evacuate a citizen who became stranded in his vehicle in the same area.
Heavy rains and runoff have flooded valleys, wadis, and roads across Salalah and throughout areas of Dhofar, and authorities are urging the public to refrain from crossing wadis or flooded roads and to avoid going near low-lying coastal areas.
The tropical low-pressure system, which made landfall in Dhofar on Friday [May 29] is set to see a deluge of 100-200 mm of rain lash the governorate over the next 24 hours, with weather advisory warnings being issued by the Public Authority for Civil Aviation’s Directorate General of Meteorology.
