Addressing challenges and reforms to employment opportunities for Omani job-seekers was the subject of an emergency statement issued by Her Excellency Dr. Tahira Al Lawati during the 11th seating of Oman’s Majlis A’Shura Council held today [Tuesday, July 21], in which the Council was gathered to discuss its report on Oman’s Value Added Tax Law.

In her statement, as Al Wisal reports, H.E. Dr. Al Lawati, an A’Shura member, said that as of the end of June 2020 there were 65,000 job-seekers in Oman — 44 per cent of whom have university degrees, 27 per cent who have general diplomas or equivalent, and 19 per cent who hold university or college diplomas.

H.E. Dr. Al Lawati stated that the Sultanate’s current employment process has not been able to find practical solutions to reduce the effect of this issue on the country, on the government, and on citizens — stressing a need to activate the authority of the National Center for Employment by re-studying the challenges facing Omani job-seekers in the employment sector.

Her Excellency also advocated a need to accelerate the issuance of a new labour law project to enhance the work environment for national workforce in the private sector. Dr. Al Lawati stated that, currently, there is no synchronization between Tanfeedh Labs and the educational qualifications of job-seekers.

She also stated that the required Omanization rate in some employment sectors does not align with the reality of the number of job-seekers, and that there has been a slow process in achieving targeted Omanization rates in Tanfeedh initiatives by 2020.

In her address to the Council, H.E. Dr. Al Lawati also stated that the Majlis A’Shura Council conducted a study of employment of local manpower, with results indicating that there was no success in the programs of employment over the past few years, and that the Council has provided the government yearly with a clear vision about creating job opportunities.
