Oman’s Minister of Health, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Saeedi, has addressed important developments in the country’s COVID-19 situation in an interview aired on Oman TV this evening [Sunday, May 31].
Speaking during the broadcast, His Excellency stated the following:
— Seven people have passed away in Oman today due to COVID-19, and not all of them had chronic underlying illnesses. Oman’s fatality rate now stands at 49.
— Worldwide figures show that the COVID-19 coronavirus has a 6 per cent mortality rate. In Oman that mortality rate has been around 0.5 per cent.
— 199 COVID-19 patients in the Sultanate are currently in hospital, with 43 per cent of these patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), with some patients spending more than four weeks in the ICU.
— Numbers of cases are expected to increase as there were people during Eid who neglected directives against gatherings, which led to a spike in cases.
— Members of the public who have complied with directives have played a big role in the reducing the increase rate of the pandemic in Oman.
— 2,500 to 3,000 COVID-19 tests are being conducted in Oman daily.
— It does not appear that a vaccine against COVID-19 ready by this year (2020).
— Five deaths occurred outside of hospital. Some of these patients knew about the illness and did not seek medical attention at the hospital.
