Oman’s Capital Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a circular today [Monday, June 1] advising health insurers in the Sultanate to cover the costs of treatment and testing for COVID-19 among those patients who have health insurance policies.

In a statement issued online, the CMA has said that the circular, which was issued to insurance providers in the country by CMA Executive President Sheikh Abdullah Salim Al Salmi, comes in coordination with the Supreme Committee for COVID-19 and the Oman Insurance Society.

As per its directives, the CMA — which is tasked with regulating the country’s insurance industry — has advised insurance providers to bear the cost of medical treatment and testing for all policy-holders showing symptoms of COVID-19, with coverage extending to any hospital.

A Ministry of Health-approved price-list and set of guidelines for insurers has also been included in the circular.

The CMA notice comes after Oman’s Minister of Health, His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Al Saeedi stated during a Supreme Committee for COVID-19 press conference held on May 14, that, for expat residents, their sponsors (companies) are responsible to pay for the cost of treatment for those who contract the coronavirus.

For expats who are un-insured or do not have a sponsor, His Excellency stated that the cost of COVID-19 treatment will be borne by the government.
