A group of scientists in Japan has managed to regenerate functional hair follicles and has identified a “third cell” that allows hair to grow back from the root. It has not yet become an available cure for baldness, but it marks an important step. For the first time, they have succeeded in getting those follicles to mature and produce hair with a more complete structure. The plan is to test whether this technique also works in human cells.
France has become the first country to legally require supermarkets to donate unsold food rather than throw it away. The new law was introduced to combat both food waste and hunger simultaneously. Perfectly edible food that would have been discarded is now redirected to charities and people in need.
