As part of its commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction, Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has launched the second phase of its flagship solar energy initiative, “Dhiya,” through a memorandum of collaboration with His Excellency Abdul-Hakeem Mohammed Al Rashdi, Wali of Shalim and the Hallaniyat Islands. This phase targets 29 government buildings in the wilayats of Al Jazir, Haima, and Shalim, installing solar systems with a total capacity of 1.1 megawatts (MW).

The project is expected to generate annual savings of around OMR 160,000 by reducing reliance on diesel generators and promoting clean energy use in public services such as healthcare, education, and water facilities. It builds on the success of the first phase, which covered six sites with 280 kilowatts of solar capacity and demonstrated significant operational cost reductions.

Fully funded by PDO, the total investment across both phases reaches nearly OMR 769,000. The implementation is being carried out entirely by local solar contractors, boosting in-country value (ICV) and developing domestic expertise in green technology. Systems include high-efficiency photovoltaic panels, advanced inverters from Huawei and Sungrow, wind-resistant mounting tested up to 160 km/h, and real-time monitoring tools like Vecom. Locally produced cables and junction boxes are also being used.

“Dhiya” aligns with Oman Vision 2040 and supports PDO’s broader sustainability strategy to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, while empowering communities through reliable, renewable infrastructure.
