The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Omani high perfumery house Amouage to launch a sustainable frankincense harvesting project at Wadi Gazelle in Dhofar.

Supported by the Agricultural and Fishery Development Fund, the project will cover around 1,500 acres and establish a framework for sustainable harvesting through scientific monitoring, responsible resource management and community participation.

The agreement was signed by Dr Saud bin Hamoud Al Habsi, Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries Wealth and Water Resources, and Sayyid Khalid bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Chairman of Amouage.

The initiative aims to strengthen the long-term sustainability of Oman’s frankincense sector, improve product quality and create greater value from one of the Sultanate’s most important natural resources. It will include field surveys, harvest monitoring, production tracking and quality assessments in line with international sustainability standards.

The project also focuses on training and employing local communities, helping build expertise in harvesting and monitoring while creating long-term employment opportunities.

Dr Al Habsi said the partnership supports Oman Vision 2040 by promoting sustainable investment, economic diversification and the growth of value-added industries linked to national resources.

Sayyid Khalid said the initiative reflects Amouage’s commitment to responsibly sourcing Oman’s iconic natural ingredients while helping showcase the country’s natural wealth and heritage to global audiences.

Frankincense harvested at Wadi Gazelle will be distilled in Oman for use in essential oils, supporting the development of the national frankincense value chain. The first harvest is expected to begin after training programmes for Omani teams are completed.
