Well-known Omani environmental activist Dareen Mehdi has passed away today [Wednesday, July 22] due to illness, her family has announced. She was in her early thirties.
Known for her volunteering work to protect and preserve the Sultanate’s natural treasures, Dareen was also an active community member and organizer of Oman’s annual Penned Thoughts writing contest.
The yearly competition was held to mark the memory of her brother Ali, a writer who, like her, died at a young age.
Two days ago, Dareen shared a post on her Instagram saying: “It has been a while since I last wrote in my diary. She is feeling lonely in 2020, cause I haven’t visited her like I used to.”
In her last social media post, she talked about the year 2020 and a shared sentiment among humanity that united the globe: “After this year passes with all its actions, the people who are at peace with themselves without moving an inch will prevail. The ones who discovered their souls in their loneliness and befriended them. The ones who read books, and healed their family relations; who announced their love, and the ones who worked hard despite the circumstances… I send you lots of love. And our last prayer is thanks to God,” she said.
Dareen was also a board member of the Environment Society of Oman and had taken part in a number of media discussions raising awareness about environmental causes — including ‘Green Minute’, a show on climate change and clean energy that she presented on Al Wisal radio in 2019.
