You can’t catch COVID-19 from your pets!

A number of false stories and suggestions are doing the rounds in Oman. We set out to straighten the facts.

You can’t catch COVID-19 from your pets or strays

There is no evidence that your pet dog or cat can pass on the coronavirus, according to the World Health Organisation.

Scientists say the likelihood of the virus making yet another jump to another species in such a short space of time is extremely small.

So continue to cuddle your cat and stroke your dog. You’ll feel better for it too!

Garlic won’t help

It won’t harm you either, but don’t bother eating garlic, gargling mouthwash, rinsing your nose with salt water, or sniffing sesame oil.  None of these will help protect you against the new virus in any way, the WHO says.

There are currently no specific medicines or vaccines for the new virus, and antibiotics don’t work either (they are used to treat bacterial infections, not viruses).

Paracetamol and other flu treatments will alleviate symptoms,  but most people get better on their own.

Scientists are working around the clock to develop a vaccine but it could be some time before it’s ready.

Chinese food is fine…

…and it’s delicious too! There is absolutely no need to stop eating Chinese food despite warnings on social media.

The best ways to avoid infection are:

  • Wash hands with soap and water regularly for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid close contact with others. Keep a 1 meter distance.
  • Avoid touching dirty hands and fingers to your face, mouth, nose and eyes.

Stay safe!
