Face-mask art designed by Omani artist Alia al Farsi has been chosen to be highlighted in a world-class event that aims to advance global social responsibility and awareness about COVID-19 by encouraging people to wear masks.

UNESCO’s Beirut Office, in partnership with NGO MEADOWS (Mediterranean Endeavors Advancing Development Of Widespread Sustainability), has reached out to artists worldwide, inviting them to take the challenge to use visual arts as a powerful tool reflecting relevant global issues through intercultural dialogue.

The concept for the initiative, created by MEADOWS President and Founder, Lena Kelekian, and with the patronage of the UNESCO Beirut Office, led to a call-to-action for face-mask art that encouraged creativity under lockdown under the topic of ‘UNESCO and MEADOWS artists against COVID-19’. The idea was translated into a full-fledged project in the framework of the prestigious program of the UNESCO RESILIART DEBATE – Artists and Creativity beyond Crisis.

For the initiative, 250 artworks were chosen among artists from 120 countries. Alia Al Farsi said that the concept behind her submission is to send a message of staying home, being close to loved ones, and surrounded by family.

Alia is a world-renowned artist, who has her work displayed in several landmarks, including the new Muscat International Airport.
