The Secretary-General of the United Nations expressed his appreciation to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik for the role that Oman played, in supporting efforts to stabilize Yemen. He also thanked him for the efforts he made in reaching an agreement to extend the truce between the Yemeni government and the country’s Houthi rebels, for an additional two months.
The initial two-month truce that was made back on April 2nd, was the first one since 2016, and a UN report showed that in the first two months, the truce resulted in a significant drop in civilian casualties and an end to severe shortages.
The UN official also expressed his optimism on a gradual return to normal life for Yemen, in light of the recent reopening of Sanaa International Airport, and the return of commercial flights for the first time in six years.
