An external radio interference caused disruptions in 5G network services yesterday [Monday, June 15] in the Sultanate, Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has announced.
As reported by Oman News Agency (ONA), fifth generation (5G) networks affiliated with Oman Telecommunications Company (Omantel) and Omani-Qatari Telecommunications Company (Ooredoo) had been affected by trans-border radio interference, which had a significant impact on the efficiency of 5G networks in some regions of the Sultanate.
Eng. Yousef bin Abdullah al- Balushi, TRA Vice-President for Spectrum Affairs, stated that the authority issued a notice to inform users in the Sultanate that the 5G networks of mobile operators Omantel and Ooredoo were effected due to external radio interference.
He pointed out, that: “TRA has made the necessary measurements to find the source of interference. It has made several field measurements in cooperation with Omantel and Ooredoo. The licensed companies have also made other additional measurements in direct coordination with companies licensed in countries of the region.”
In a statement to ONA, al- Balushi said that the TRA has worked continuously in coordination with relevant authorities in the countries of the region to resolve and end the damage to 5G networks in the Sultanate.
He added: “TRA will discuss the latest developments related to this matter at the video-conferencing meeting of the Technical Committee of the Technical Office of Communications of the GCC General Secretariat to be held on June 23-24.
There are other countries in the region that also suffered from the radio interference on the 5G networks of their operators. The solution to these interference requires a concerted effort and coordination to quickly find the source of the interference,” al-Balushi added.
