New York has its Statue of Liberty, India its Taj Mahal, Egypt its Great Pyramids, and Paris its Eiffel Tower.
Now, Oman could soon find itself added to the list of global icons with a landmark of its own.
In a report released by the Omani government’s Implementation Support and Follow-Up Unit (ISFU) — which falls under Tanfeedh’s National Program for Economic Diversity, an initiative to develop a national landmark is one of the key tenets of the country’s plans to boost its tourism sector.
As per the report, the IFSU said:
“With Oman increasingly finding itself in the international tourism spotlight, this initiative aims to create an iconic landmark that a
global audience could associate directly with the Sultanate of
Oman. Similar to landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France,
the proposed landmark would also function as a destination
product to attract tourism into the country. The landmark will
be incorporated as part of a larger mixed-use development to
ensure commercial viability and sustainability.”
Challenges faced by the initiative, as outlined in the report, included land allocation — with an alternative location required to be assigned for the landmark in collaboration with project stakeholders the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Housing, and the Royal Oman Police.
