The number of expatriates living legally in Oman has dropped from 1,858,516 in June 2020 to 1,801,739 in July, according to recent data published by the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI).
That means roughly 56,700 expats have left the country in a single month.
Expat residents now make up only 39.8 per cent of the Sultanate’s total population, compared to 41.5 per cent in April 2020.

However, in the capital of Muscat, Omanis comprise 41.7 per cent of the total population, according to the report.
This drop in numbers could be attributed to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on businesses, in addition to the Omanization drive that has been pushed by the government amid demands for more job opportunities for the local workforce.
