The Indian expat community has been left reeling after the death of popular artist Unni Krishnan, age 50, who was found deceased in his home in Muscat on Saturday [September 5].
A beloved member of Oman’s Keralite diaspora, Unni had been living in the Sultanate for over ten years and was an accomplished artist, graphic designer, painter, and signboard artist.
According to local reports, Unni, who hailed from Chavakkad, Kerala, was an integral part of Oman’s cultural community, and was also known for his contributions as a local social worker.
Speaking to Merge 104.8, an Indian expat and close friend of Unni’s who has lived in Oman for over 35 years, paid tribute to his friend’s legacy.
“I have known Unni for over ten years,” he states, preferring his name not be published. “He is a fantastic artist. But by artist, I don’t just mean an artist who is proficient with the brush and oil paints. He is also a fantastic drama actor with a mind for creativity — all encompassed in a smile.
He has been a worker with the Mind Muscat group and has conducted and exhibited several of his works there.
More recently he has worked in creating stage sets for dramas. All over Muscat, he has helped grow many drama and theatre acts throughout his years here.
He was a very helpful man who brought many theater acts to life — sometimes all alone just to help others. He also acted in a telefilm recently.
Keeping that part of him aside, Unni had a big heart and helped many expats in Oman. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he helped several families monetarily or to provide them with food, flight ticket resources, and other necessary resources.
He is one of the most positive people I have ever met, which is what breaks my heart. I am shocked to hear about this news, and am finding it very hard to deal with.”
Unni Krishnan is survived by his wife and two daughters.
Royal Oman Police authorities are currently investigating the cause of his death.
