VOMA Global, a local martial arts gym in Al Khuwair, held a ceremony yesterday to celebrate MMA figher, Abdulmajeed Al Balushi’s victory at the Dubai International Amateur Martial Arts Championship.
The 27-year-old fighter beat a Cameroonian MMA champion in the third-round by unanimous decision.
“My aim was to win. No matter what, I was not leaving that cage with a loss. I didn’t care what happened inside, but I knew that I will leave the cage with my hand, and the Omani flag, raised at the end,” said Abdulmajeed.
His twin brother, Mahmood Al Balushi, was also meant to fight at the Dubai International Amateur Martial Arts Championship, but a last-minute withdrawal led to the cancellation of his fight.
“At first, I was really disappointed, but I did not let the disappointment affect me, because we have a task. At least one of us is fighting, so I shifted my focus to helping my brother both physically and mentally,” said Mahmood.
Both brothers have had a passion for combat sports from a young age, and their coach, BJJ black belt and gold medalist Taoufik Serbout, saw great potential in them.
“They have a lot of dedication. They come in every single day. Other people come in at the beginning of the week, and then by the end of the week I don’t see them, but with these two, they always show up, so I stopped training group classes in MMA and I focused only on them. Other people come to the gym only when they are in shape, and there is no benefit in that. You have to come even when you don’t want to, and I saw that with these too. They have this good mentality so I stayed with them.”
The brothers both hope to become world champions, and represent Oman on the biggest stages like Bellator and the UFC.
