Government representatives will share experiences of developing a child- sensitive Voluntary National Review
Government of Oman representatives are set to participate in a United Nations panel discussion to share their experiences in developing a child-sensitive and child- inclusive Voluntary National Review (VNR) at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) in New York.
The Government of Oman delivered its VNR report showing its results with respect to national implementation of all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the HLPF in July 2019. In preparing its VNR, Oman made exceptional efforts to include the views of children and adolescents.
The panel discussion is part of a VNR Lab, which allows member states to reflect on VNR processes, and is co-hosted by Delegates from Oman participating in the VNR Lab represent government and civil society.
“The adoption of the Omani Child Law, in addition to other legislative advancements and initiatives, had encourage children’s involvement in our national dialogue,” said Sheikh Mohammed bin Sa’ayed al-Kalbani, Minister of Social Development. “And we are working on effective mechanisms to further assist children in expressing their views within their families and communities, in their schools and other institutions about the SDGs.”
“It is critical that the voices of children and young people are heard, and their views integrated in a meaningful and systemic way into the development agenda,” said Her Highness Sayyida Dr Mona Bint Fahd Al Said, Chair of Children First Association. “CFA helped facilitate a workshop for young people on the SDGs with the Ministry of Social Development and other partners, so I am delighted to be able to share some of Oman’s experiences by participating in the panel.”
“In Oman 45.7 percent of the national population is under age 20,” explained His Excellency Ambassador Dr Mohamed Al-Hassan, Permanent Representative of Oman to the United Nations. “This makes the inclusion of young people in our political processes absolutely critical. It goes without saying that the extent to which Oman meets the SDGs will directlyaffect and depend on the nation’s children.”
The event is on 15 July 2020 and will start at 7.30 am New York time/3.30 pm Muscat time with brief expert presentations on producing child-sensitive and child-inclusive VNRs. The panel discussion will follow. In addition to Oman, other panellists are from Indonesia, Ghana, Mexico and Bulgaria.
