In a virtual press conference held today [Monday, June 8] Oman’s Ministry of Transport (MoT) unveiled its strategic plans for development across the Sultanate’s transport and logistics sector up until 2023, in an effort to increase national employment rates and job opportunities, and facilitate economic diversity.
During the press conference, officials from the Ministry noted the following objectives:
— At the beginning of the year, the MoT adopted a specific plan for its initiatives and executive projects but, due to the emergence of the global COVID-19 pandemic and the collapse of global oil prices, the Ministry felt the imperative to review priorities of projects and operating plans and work to align them with the challenges of these new circumstances.
— Necessary measures to enable Omani ports to enhance direct imports and develop export activities to various countries will continue in an effort to position Oman as a global logistics centre and to enhance the integrity of its logistics system.
— The Ministry and the General Authority of Civil Aviation with work with Oman Aviation Group and relevant authorities to develop and expedite a plan aimed at resuming flights and to recover, promote, and sustain aviation operations in the Sultanate.
— The Ministry will intensify its efforts to enable the private sector to play a primary role through the privatization of some existing businesses in government companies that are attractive to the private sector.
— Work is currently underway on 453 kms of road projects in Oman, with the Ministry planning to open the third part of the Adam-Thumrait road, the Draiz-Yanqul road, and the remainder of the Sharqiyah Expressway this year.
— Work on the Rusayl-Bidbid road is ongoing and the project has been marked as priority for implementation.
