Nearly 1,400 labourers in Oman who have been laid off by Al Tasnim Group will be sent home in coordination with their embassies, Saeed Al-Mahri, Executive Director of Relations and External Affairs at Al Tasnim Cement Products.

As Merge 104.8’s sister station Al Wisal reports, videos circulated online today [Sunday, July 12] showed labourers voicing their frustration after nearly three months on since losing their jobs.

However, Al Mahri said that the workers remain under the company’s responsibility and have been receiving food and accommodation even after being made redundant.

Speaking to Al Wisal, Al Mahri explained that some labourers who lost their jobs started causing damage to property, including offices and buses.

He explained that the company, in cooperation with the Royal Oman Police and the Ministry of Manpower have convinced many of the groups to stop the movement, saying that their embassies were called to facilitate flights to return them to their countries upon giving the their end-of-service gratuity.

Al Mahri explained that some labourers had been causing issues at the camps since July 8, saying that: “They stopped those labourers who are still employed from doing their work.”

Details on when the flight arrangements will be made for their repatriation have not yet been announced, as procedures are currently underway to organize the departures with a number of embassies in Muscat.
