Oman’s Environment Conservation Office has conducted studies across bat populations in Oman over the past three years in order to identify and register new types of bat species found in the Sultanate — particularly in the Dhofar region.
As Merge 104.8’s sister station Al Wisal reports, thus far a total of 26 bat species have been recorded in Oman, with environmental researchers and conservationists identifying and registering different locations within the country for further exploration of other possible types from among the 1,400 species of bats found around the world.
Leading the Oman research team, Zahran bin Ahmed Al Abdulsalam, Assistant to the Manager of the Environment Affairs Department at the Environment Conservation Office, says that research on the various species is in collaboration with international organizations.
“Releasing scientific papers about our research helps boost overall efforts related to discovering these types of species,” he says. “It also boosts understanding of these animals and helps identify the locations of their populations, their benefits to the environment, and what viruses they contain which may affect public health in Oman.”
