Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) said that it coordinated its efforts with the ROP and the Ministry of Labour, to start investigating reports that were issued by foreign organizations regarding a group of Zimbabwean and Sierra Leon women, who were reportedly inhumanely treated after they arrived in the Sultanate as domestic workers.

According to reports, the workers were subjected to difficult working and living conditions. The articles said that the women were considered victims of human trafficking as defined by the United Nations.

OHRC said that the women should have filed their complaints to the relevant authorities in Oman, adding that Omani laws and regulations do protect victims of human trafficking and they ensure that everyone is allowed to maintain their dignity. The organization added that forced labour is prohibited by the Ministry of Labour.

The commission said that the confiscation of workers’ passports is also not permitted under Omani law, and that any violation should be reported to the ROP or the Ministry of Labor.

For those who do become victims of human trafficking, the OHRC has also coordinated with the Ministry of Social Development to ensure that they are provided with legal assistance, health care, psychological support, and accommodation with Dar Al Wifaq until their case is settled.

It also called on anyone who is facing inhumane treatment, whether Omani or non-Omani, to report violations through the Toll-Free number 1970, the WhatsApp number 72221966, or the website www.ohrc.com.
