New Amendments to Laws Regarding Slandering Royal Family and Dealing in Organs

His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik recently issued Royal Decree No. 68/2022, amending some provisions of the Penal Law.
The key highlights of the new amendments include:
States that anyone who slanders or denigrates His Majesty the Sultan, his wife and children or the crown prince, either openly or by means of publication, will receive a 3-7-year jail term.
- Article (103) bis:
States that anyone who creates the Sultanate’s map, places it on any products, jewelry, or tools, or uses it as a trademark for the purpose of advertising or commercial publicity, without obtaining a license from the relevant authorities, will be punished. The punishment involves a 3-month to 3-year jail term, and a fine of between 1,000 OMR and 5,000 OMR.
- Article (168) bis:
States that violators of the provisions of the regulations and decisions regulating municipal activities will be punished with imprisonment of up to 6 months, and a fine between 1,000 OMR and 5,000 OMR, or one of the two.
- Article (321) bis:
States that anyone who deals in any organ of the human body, or any tissues or cells for the purpose of selling or buying, will be punished with a 3-7-year imprisonment sentence. Medical professionals who advocated for, announced, promoted, or mediated such activities will be liable to a prison term of between 5-10 years.
