Today, January 11th, 2022, marks the two-year anniversary of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tairk’s ascension to power. His Majesty the Sultan has managed to bring positive changes to the country and guide it through tough times over the span of only a few years.
In his first remarks as the Sultan of Oman, His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik vowed to uphold the late Sultan Qaboos’ legacy in maintaining a neutral foreign policy and being a “friend to all, and an enemy to none”. In spite of the fact that Oman is surrounded by countries that are in conflict with one another, His Majesty the Sultan managed to continue advocating for international peace, and non-interference in the internal affairs of others.
Another legacy that His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik continued was the late Sultan’s legacy of directly meeting with his people and listening to their concerns and proposals.
He also launched Oman Vision 2040, which aims to act as a guide for the country’s social and economic development over the span of the next 20 years. The vision targets a set of national priorities such as health, innovation, education, research, economic diversification, fiscal sustainability and governance of the State’s Administrative Apparatus, and all this falls in line with His Majesty’s plan to create a brighter future for Oman and its people.
In terms of the Sultanate’s economy, the Sultan managed to bring about positive changes, despite the numerous setbacks that the country, and the world, faced in recent years. His Majesty the Sultan managed to change Oman’s global credit rating from “negative”, to “positive” and “stable”, and he also managed to control public spending, cut down public debt, and augment the Central Bank of Oman reserves in foreign currency.
The country, and the world, have faced challenging times in the past two years, with a number of setbacks, such as the global pandemic as well as the devastating Cyclone Shaheen that hit the nation last year. His Majesty the Sultan guided his people through the difficult times under his wise leadership, and he continued to build hope for a better and stronger Oman.
His Majesty Sultan Haitham continues to follow in the footsteps of a legendary leader, the late Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who took the country from an underdeveloped nation with only three schools and 10 km of paved road, to a fast-developing country with over 1,600 schools and over 20,000 km of paved road.
The visionary leader affirmed in the first speech that he gave as the Omani head of state, that the way to preserve the late Sultan’s achievements is to build on the basic foundations that he had laid, and he vowed to do just that.
