Swedish furniture giant, IKEA, officially launched today, in an opening ceremony that was attended by over 3,000 people!
The customers and members of the media, were all welcomed with big festivities, including a traditional Omani music group, as well as face painting for children.
The furniture store is 25,000 square meters and it boasts several features, including a Swedish Food Market and a restaurant that seats nearly 400 people. IKEA Oman also put a big effort on increasing its digital presence in the region, which Managing Director Vinod Jayan said makes for a more convenient shopping experience for shoppers across the country.
“We wanted to open the flagship store here in Oman, and not just a small shop. So that’s the reason we took some time. But even though it has taken some time, I think it has come out in the best way possible. This is one of the most beautiful stores that we have within our IKEA Futtaim group,” he said.
According to the managing director, opening in Oman was a natural step for the franchise, as it continues to expand in the region.
The new store also brought with it 300 new job vacancies, of which 40% are Omani, and overall, around 48,000 people applied for various positions across different departments.
IKEA Oman also hired the first female fork lifter in the region, which Jayan said was in line with the IKEA brand’s outlook on women empowerment.
