Two separate explosions which took place today [Monday, August 31] at a restaurant in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have killed three people and left several others injured.
In a statement issued by Emirates News Agency (WAM), Rapid Intervention Teams of the Emergency and Public Safety Directorate of Abu Dhabi were called to a gas explosion in a restaurant located in a building on Rashid bin Saeed Street.
The authority said that: “The Command and Control Centre in Abu Dhabi received a report on Monday morning about an explosion in a restaurant. Immediately, the Rapid Intervention Teams rushed to the spot and safely evacuated the residents of the building, who sustained some minor to medium injuries, and cordoned off the area to ensure the safety of the public.”
Those who suffered injuries in the blast were transferred to hospital for medical attention, Abu Dhabi Police confirmed.
The Abu Dhabi Media Office has since announced two fatalities as a result of the incident — a victim near the site of the explosion who was killed, “and a second passer-by who was hit by debris.”
As per the media office, investigations at the site revealed that the cause of the blast was due to “a misalignment in the gas container fittings following refueling.”
A third person was also killed in a similar incident in Dubai today due to the explosion of a gas cylinder at a restaurant.
In a report from Reuters, Abu Dhabi’s The National newspaper confirmed that, according to Dubai Civil Defence authorities, the fire resulting from the blast damaged the ground floor of the building which housed the restaurant, but was controlled and extinguished in 33 minutes.
